Introduction to Oil Painting with Impressionist Color
March 14, 2023 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm
Color, as seen by Impressionist painters, is the portal for Boston School Artist, Melody Phaneuf. The focus of this course is on seeing and employing color as a vibrant organizational plan for the painting process. Students will begin with the exploration of color families, using them to replicate an impressionist painting. Building on this experience, students will translate a photographic resource into an original oil painting. Students will draw inspiration from American Impressionists in the Cape Ann Museum collections including Childe Hassam, Charles Hopkinson, and Rosamond Smith Bouve.
Phaneuf is well known for her evocative still life, landscape, and portrait paintings. Her colorful oil paintings merge observation from life with imagination and memory. Her impressionistic style reveals the beauty of color and light that transforms viewers with aesthetic appeal. Phaneuf remains influenced by her Boston School training but has formulated a personal approach to painting. A member of the Cape Ann Artisans, Phaneuf is offering this course at the Cape Ann Museum as part of the Cape Ann Artisans 40th Anniversary in 2023.
Students of all levels are encouraged to apply. Materials are not included. Water-based oil paints will be used for this class and a supply list will be sent out after registration. Please note, this course takes place in the Janet & William Ellery James Center at the Cape Ann Museum Green, 13 Poplar Street, Gloucester, MA.
