TO BE A GLOUCESTERMAN
The Story of Edward Day Cohota
The Gloucester400+ Stories Project is proud to announce the sponsorship of a staged reading/mini-production of “To Be A Gloucesterman” written and produced by Melville Brown and directed by Adam Sarette. This musical play is in its early stages of development and the Gloucester400 Stories Project is integrally involved in this unique form of storytelling.
The story is about a young orphan from Shanghai in the mid-1800s who was taken in by Captain Sargent Day of Gloucester. The orphan’s name became Edward Day Cohota, and while living in Gloucester, he soon joined the U.S. Army and fought in the Civil War, saving the life of a fellow Gloucesterman during battle. He then served in the army for almost thirty more years, all without ever being allowed to become a U.S. citizen. This staged reading will touch upon the highs and lows, and twists and turns of Edward’s journey from Shanghai to Gloucester, and beyond.
Stories Project Leader, Terry Weber Mangos, is especially honored to share that the producer of the play (Melville Brown) is the great grandson of Edward Day Cohota. “It is one of the goals of the Stories Project to aid families in their quest to honor their ancestors’ legacies, especially by persons who may have been marginalized in the past,” said Weber. “Mel is a lyricist and writer, and I’m thrilled we’re assisting him in the telling of his great grandfather’s story.”
