GLOUCESTER AND THE WAR OF 1898

Mrs. Brooks’s Monument Explained

with Wayne Soini

In honor of Gloucester’s 400+ Anniversary, local historian Wayne Soini will present Gloucester’s Company G Volunteers and the U.S.S. Gloucester in the War of 1898 at the Cape Ann Museum Library & Archives on Tuesday, May 23 at 11:00 am. Significantly, 2023 also marks the 125th anniversary of the War of 1898. Soini, who met Company G’s commander, Captain James Centennial Nutt, born on July 4, 1876, will share the stories of the men and the ship as they are captured on the local monument at the corner of Pleasant and Prospect Streets. The U.S.S. Gloucester was originally J.P. Morgan’s 241-foot yacht and visited Gloucester to great acclaim just after the war.
